L-Carnitine
A naturally occurring quaternary ammonium compound involved in mitochondrial fatty acid transport.

Overview
L-Carnitine is a naturally occurring quaternary ammonium compound biosynthesized from lysine and methionine. It functions as an obligate cofactor for the transport of long-chain acyl groups across the inner mitochondrial membrane via the carnitine shuttle system. L-Carnitine is used in research to study mitochondrial fatty acid beta-oxidation, carnitine palmitoyltransferase (CPT) enzyme activity, and the molecular regulation of lipid metabolism in cell-based models.
